    He didn't mention this but make no mistake this video was for demonstration purposes only. Watching this video it is quite easy to look at this and say to yourself "I could easily have swam back to shore in that rip tide" and you probably wouldn't be wrong but rip tides can be MUCH MUCH MUCH more extreme than this one. You never know just how strong it will be if you accidentally get caught in one and being over confident that you can swim against it could make you lose all your energy and still not make it then be stuck exhausted trying to wait it out or move to a location where you can get back in.

    Video is great. I've always been told currents take you to the middle of the ocean, pull you under, and drown you. But I guess not. Side note: telling people not to try something...people are gonna try. I'll remember all this next time I go to the beach. Always been kind of scared to go more than maybe 20 or so feet away from shore because of fearing currents.

    I got caught in a rip while going out snorkling with a friend in WA. The first thing i noticed was that the water became really, really cold. We were not very deep, initially only about 1 to 1.5m. When i looked down, the ground was passing so quickly, it was almost a blurr and in a flash i was too deep to stand. The rip was too strong to swim against. I wore a wet suit and flippers, so staying afloat and warm wasn't a concern (had i just been in swimmers i would have been terrified) The gear helped me swim at an angle to the rip and enabled me to get close enough to reach a sand bank that let me stand up walk and swim my way clear. Being aware of your surroundings is so important. If the change in water temperature had not caught my attention, i may not have acted quickly enough to get out.

    I think you’re meant to swim as hard against it as you can until you make it back to shore. If it still pulls you out just swim harder.

    I'm more confused about what I should do after this video than before. Uhh, float... but try to swim back... no wait, float over to the waves, which will take you back in... except when they're part of the rip, in which case they'll take you further out... by the way, floats go in all different directions... you'll know which direction if you are always around oceans but will have no idea if you're not... I'm now 100 meters out... uh, what am I supposed to do exactly? Very poorly explained.

    Did you watch your video before posting? The first thing you say is to take 5-10 min to watch the ocean a s identify the rip. You explained nothing about doing that and after 10 sec you ran into the water. You can do better than this!!

    Got stuck in one of these when I was a teenager in California. Had no idea what was going on, my brother and I panicked and were screaming for help... but nobody can hear you through the sound of the waves. I remember getting back on shore and just laying there exhausted having swam against the tide.

    What if the rip is bringing you out away from the beach? All you did was flow with the rip until it brought you to a safe zone. That doesn't always happen. What a joke!

    My best friends brother from Germany was with his wife the first day on vacation in Greece. He drowned, trying to save a couple of women who screamed for help. He was a good swimmer and was only 40 years old. Very sad for the family. The women survived and were rescued.

    Great instruction. I recently visited the outer banks of N.C. and the ocean was rough. Rip current alert every day. I did my swimming at the pool instead of the ocean for that trip.

    One reason a lot of people ever need rescuing is because they overestimate their own abilities and limitations (thinking you're a great swimmer when you're really not). This video is for those people.

    Telling someone who is in trouble not to yell or notify others seems like horrible advice. A large portion of people die in life threatening situations due to not notifying others. Don’t panic for sure, but do yell out. On the other hand, if it causes others to jump in and get in trouble… dang

    Thank you!!! This is THE MOST important advice ever!!! Don't ever panic!!! Fortunately I had the opportunity to learn fron my dad when being like 7 yrs old, how to swim across a river (basically a 100% rip 😉). Never ever fight it! You're never strong enough to fight it. (Almost drowned there 😄) Got me to be a lifeguard in my younger days, too. Learn to float, stay calm, if necessary raise your arm for help and be prepared to land WAY off. Stay safe and thank you lifeguards for your service!!! ❤❤❤

  • @maggiemay1434
    @maggiemay1434 День тому

    Sorry, but the advice here is nearly worthless. The only thing people remember is to stay calm as the rip takes them out into the ocean. What if there’s no life guard. What if no one sees you. If it can go any direction, how do you even know you’re in one? If you asked viewers what a rip-tide was after viewing this, would they even know? What does swim toward the waves mean and how can you even see that when you’re in the water?

    I went to Bondi in 2019 and nearly got sucked out by a rip tide. It went from shallow to deep incredibly fast, and before i knew it I was at the mercy of the current. Luckily, i was able to influence my drift towards rocks where a random man was standing, and he helped me up by lending a hand. Without him, things could have gone much worse. Wish I knew better before swimming; the beauty is so awe inspiring that you forget to think rationally.

    Rips are Not dangerous....it's the self-induced panic that's dangerous....the human Mind can be your best friend, or your Worst enemy. This should be a life lesson for Many things, not just the Ocean. Always stay calm and "think" your way out, never blindly react.

    I think having to swim BETWEEN flags is confusing and is the reason so many get stuck in them. It's easier to mark off places people shouldn't be than corral them into a specific area.
